Supporting you through pregnancy

Acupuncture can be used throughout pregnancy to help manage a range of symptoms that are often considered a normal part of pregnancy—but don’t have to be simply endured.

Treatment may support:

  • Nausea and morning sickness
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Back, hip, and pelvic discomfort
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Headaches
  • Stress and anxiety

Each treatment is tailored to you as an individual, recognising that every pregnancy is different.

“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new." - Osho

Ongoing care during pregnancy

Many women choose to have acupuncture regularly throughout pregnancy. As your body changes and your baby develops, treatment can provide ongoing support and help maintain balance.

Some patients attend monthly in early pregnancy, with more frequent sessions later on – particularly if specific symptoms arise or additional support is needed.

Preparing for birth (from 36–37 weeks)

In the final weeks of pregnancy, acupuncture can be used to help prepare your body for labour.
Treatment is tailored to you but may focus on:

  • Supporting the body’s natural readiness for labour
  • Encouraging optimal positioning of your baby
  • Promoting energy and stamina
  • Helping you feel calm and prepared

This is often offered as a short course of weekly treatments leading up to your due date.

Breech and post-dates support

Acupuncture may also be used for more specific support in later pregnancy.

Breech presentation (around 34–36 weeks)

Breech babies are ideally  treated between 34 – 36 weeks gestation. This is often a one off treatment with women being shown how to continue treatment at home with a moxa stick (a herb that has been shaped into a cigar like stick). The moxa stick is lit and held over specific places in the body to stimulate the acupuncture points.

Post-dates / labour preparation

Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment to encourage the natural onset of labour for post-term babies. It works harmoniously with the delicate hormonal balance of late pregnancy, stimulates uterine contractions, dilates the cervix and aims to promote an efficient labour by invigorating and descending a woman’s energy to allow her baby to be born.   Acupuncture treatment can often facilitate the initiation of contractions. In some cases women will only require one treatment, but more commonly two or three treatments are required to sustain contractions.

Postnatal support

There is a long documented history in traditional Chinese medicine of women using diet to encourage lactation and recovery from childbirth or a miscarriage. This was seen as very important for ensuring future fertility and for women to provide future care for their families. Termed the ‘Golden month’ in China this was seen as a time of resting and consuming specific foods to aid recovery. While 30 days of recovery time may initially sound a little excessive, it was considered essential to compensate for not only the birth but also the total experience of being pregnant for nine months. This is not a time for absolute bed rest but rather a time where physical rest is taken at every opportunity, exercise is appropriate (not an exhausting attempt to get back into shape), and a diet that focuses on building blood and energy. Acupuncture and moxibustion (mother warming) treatment can be given at this time to support your body to rebuild strength.

Acupuncture may help with:

  • Restoring energy and strength
  • Supporting emotional wellbeing
  • Improving sleep
  • General recovery after pregnancy and birth

What to expect

Your first appointment begins with a detailed consultation, where I will take time to get to know you and take a full health history finding out how your pregnancy is going. Each woman is treated according to their own unique set of conditions and symptoms. This ensures that your treatment is carefully tailored to you and your stage of pregnancy.

After the initial consultation you will also receive an acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture during pregnancy is always gentle and adapted with care. You will be positioned comfortably – usually lying on your side or supported with cushions – so that you feel relaxed and at ease throughout.

Fine, sterile needles are used and are typically left in place for around 20–30 minutes. Many patients find this time deeply calming, offering a chance to rest as well as receive treatment.

Follow-up appointments are shorter and focus on supporting you as your pregnancy progresses. Treatments may change over time depending on your symptoms and needs.

You do not need to have had acupuncture before – treatment is always adapted to feel comfortable and appropriate for you.

A calm, one-to-one approach

As a sole practitioner, I offer private, individual treatments in a quiet setting. This allows time to focus entirely on you, creating a more personalised and supportive experience than busier multi-bed clinics.

My background in pregnancy care

Alongside my acupuncture training, I have a long-standing background in supporting women through pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period.

I previously worked as a doula, supporting women through a wide range of birth experiences—from planned caesarean births to home and water births. I am also a qualified hypnobirthing teacher, and trained in both pre and postnatal yoga, as well as baby massage.

I was also recognised as one of London’s top pregnancy yoga teachers by Time Out.

While I now focus solely on acupuncture, this experience continues to inform my work. It gives me a deeper understanding of the physical and emotional changes that can take place during pregnancy, as well as the different paths birth can take.

My aim is always to offer thoughtful, supportive care that meets you where you are, whatever your experience of pregnancy.
