Acupuncture for Fertility & IVF Support
Acupuncture for Fertility & IVF Support
Trying to conceive – particularly alongside IVF – can be an all-encompassing experience. It asks a great deal of your body, your time, and your emotional resilience.
Many people aren’t just looking for treatment – they want steady, informed support through both the physiological and emotional demands of the journey.
Acupuncture offers a way to work with your body more deliberately during this time – supporting hormonal balance, blood flow, and nervous system regulation – while also creating space to feel more grounded emotionally.
This usually involves working together over a number of weeks or months, with treatment carefully timed to your cycle or IVF plan.
“Lucy is amazing at what she does. From my very first appointment, I felt Lucy really listened to me, which meant she was able to tailor my treatment and give me answers and explanations that I hadn’t been given by my previous acupuncturist. Going through IVF is difficult enough, but under Lucy’s treatment I felt heard, reassured, and instantly relaxed! Every session I came away with more insights into what’s happening in my body and Lucy always offers compassion and care. I would absolutely recommend Lucy to anyone who is trying to conceive and considering starting acupuncture, as it has been an important part of my journey this year.” AH
A structured, holistic approach
Fertility acupuncture works best as a planned, consistent course of treatment, rather than occasional sessions. In my practice, we take a whole-body approach, supporting not just reproductive function but also the nervous system, stress regulation, and overall resilience.
From the outset, you will know:
- When to begin treatment
- How often to come
- How sessions will adapt as your cycle progresses
- This structure allows treatment to be effective, calming, and empowering.
How acupuncture may support your IVF journey
Consistency over time is critical.
Where possible, I recommend beginning treatment around three months before IVF, supporting the full development cycle of the egg and optimising the body’s conditions. Sessions are typically weekly.
As you move through your IVF cycle, treatment is carefully aligned with each stage – adjusting frequency and focus to support both physical and emotional needs.
If you’re already partway through a cycle, we adapt the plan to suit your current stage. Clarity and predictability are key, helping you feel supported throughout.

Treatment Phases for Acupuncture throughout IVF: stage-by-stage support
Each IVF journey is slightly different, but here’s how acupuncture typically fits into the process. When acupuncture is used to support IVF, it is most effective when aligned with each stage of the process.
Rather than focusing on a single point in time, treatment is adapted throughout your cycle – supporting your body before, during, and after key phases.
Below is a guide to how acupuncture is typically used alongside IVF. My Blog post also highlights how Acupuncture can offer stage-by-stage support.
1
Preparation phase
(6–12 weeks before IVF)
Fertility acupuncture, for at least 3-4 months prior to IVF is recommended to prepare the body for treatment and to ensure that both partners are in their optimum state of health emotionally and physically.
During this time, it is possible to have an impact on the health of both the egg and improve the quality of the sperm.
Even a six week fertility acupuncture programme prior to commencing IVF or fertility treatment is beneficial.
2
Acupuncture During IVF
There are varying fertility protocols with different timeframes. I recommend weekly acupuncture for the women from the first day of medication through to embryo transfer.
3
Acupuncture Before Egg Collection
I recommend a single fertility acupuncture treatment for the male prior to egg collection to relieve anxiety.
Where there is male factor infertility, a fertility acupuncture programme is recommended for the male to optimise sperm quality, motility and count.
4
Acupuncture After Egg Collection
IVF patients are recommended to have an acupuncture treatment after egg collection, to reduce any local tissue trauma or bleeding, and help prepare a calm environment for the arrival of an embryo.
5
Acupuncture and Embryo Transfer (or Frozen Embryo Transfer)
I recommend a fertility acupuncture before embryo transfer and acupuncture after embryo transfer to improve pregnancy rates.
This protocol is the same for frozen embryo transfers (FET).
Acupuncture and embryo transfer research trials shows that fertility acupuncture before embryo transfer and acupuncture after embryo transfer may improve pregnancy rates by up to 65%.
Acupuncture during this time is highly recommended by many fertility clinics worldwide and some clinics incorporate acupuncture as part of their IVF treatments.
6
Acupuncture and Implantation
I recommend two fertility acupuncture treatments during the two week wait period before you take a pregnancy test. The first treatment is to support implantation.
Implantation time can vary depending on when the embryos were transferred. It is usually about 2-3 days after a day 3 embryo transfer, and the day of or the day after a day 5 embryo transfer.
7
Acupuncture Before Your Pregnancy Test
The second treatment during the two week wait is to support you emotionally, to ease anxiety and promote relaxation.
If you have a positive pregnancy test: I recommend weekly acupuncture treatment during the first trimester, up to week 12/13 as there is a higher risk of miscarriage in IVF induced pregnancies.
The treatments are gentle and supportive and help promote a healthy pregnancy. I offer acupuncture during our pregnancy programme to support all stages of pregnancy.
Working mid-cycle
Even if you start partway through IVF, acupuncture can still provide meaningful support at key stages – helping the body adapt to stimulation, recovery, and transfer, while providing emotional steadiness.
My approach
I work in a clinically informed, whole-body way. Fertility treatment can feel overwhelming and highly medicalised; acupuncture creates a different kind of space—one that nurtures your body, nervous system, and emotional resilience.
You will always be met with clarity, honesty, and a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
Evidence-informed care
Research suggests acupuncture may support IVF outcomes and reduce stress, although findings are mixed and further research is ongoing. A summary from the British Acupuncture Council indicates that acupuncture administered at multiple points across an IVF or ICSI cycle may positively affect clinical pregnancy and live birth rates, particularly when treatment is consistent over time.
Acupuncture is therefore used as supportive care, working alongside your fertility clinic to optimise conditions within your body, not as a replacement for medical treatment.
Investment & working together
Fertility acupuncture is most effective as a structured course of treatment. Most people choose weekly sessions, particularly in the lead-up to IVF, then continue with tailored timing as their cycle progresses.
A clear plan after your initial consultation ensures:
- Alignment with your IVF timeline
- Consistency without overwhelm
- Flexibility as your body responds
- Pre-booked blocks of sessions are available for those who prefer continuity and reassurance.
A considered approach
This work asks for commitment of time, energy, and focus. My role is to make that commitment feel clear, supported, and worthwhile.
