Welcome to My Calm and Supportive Space
At Lucy Macgregor Acupuncture and Wellness, my work is guided by the wisdom of Chinese Medicine and a deep belief in the body’s natural ability to heal when given the right support.
Chinese Medicine takes a deep, holistic view of health, aiming to understand the root causes of imbalance and restore harmony gently and effectively. Rather than simply treating symptoms, it works to support the whole system through acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, and lifestyle advice. Every treatment is tailored to your unique constitution, history, and stage of life.
Traditional Chinese Medicine – Holistic Balance
Acupuncture originates from ancient Eastern medicine, which views the body as a delicate, interconnected system of energy and balance. In this paradigm, a vital life force – often called Qi (pronounced “chee”) – flows through networks of channels or meridians.
Health is understood as harmony among the body’s energies, and illnesses arise when that flow becomes disrupted – whether through stress, emotional strain, physical trauma, poor lifestyle, or environmental influences.
By gently inserting ultra-fine needles at carefully selected points along the meridians, acupuncture aims to unblock and rebalance the flow of Qi. This rebalancing supports the body’s natural capacity to heal itself – addressing not only physical symptoms, but also emotional and mental well-being.
Western Medical Perspective – Physiological & Neurobiological Effects
From a Western medical viewpoint, acupuncture can be seen as a stimulus that influences the body’s physiology, contributing to pain relief, improved circulation, immune modulation, and nervous system balance.
Inserting fine needles triggers the stimulation of nerve endings in the skin and tissues. These signals travel through peripheral nerves to the central nervous system, prompting the release of endorphins and neuropeptides — the body’s natural pain-relievers — which can ease pain and discomfort.
Needle stimulation may also influence local circulation and blood flow, support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and encourage the regulation of the autonomic nervous system (balancing sympathetic and parasympathetic responses).
At a broader level, acupuncture may interact with areas of the brain that regulate mood, stress and pain perception. By influencing neurotransmitters and neural pathways, it may promote relaxation, emotional balance and overall wellness.
Whole Person Care
Whether you connect more with the energy-based framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine or the physiological explanations offered by Western science, acupuncture offers a holistic pathway to healing. It supports not just immediate symptoms, but can contribute to longer-term balance and resilience – physical, emotional and mental.
Each treatment is carefully tailored to the individual, considering not just the presenting symptoms but lifestyle, emotional health, stress, and personal history. This personalised, integrative approach reflects a commitment to restore balance, support the body’s innate healing ability and nurture lasting well-being.

Research
Acupuncture is no longer dismissed as a placebo. One of the main challenges in acupuncture research is that randomised controlled trials (the gold standard in research design) have limitations when applied to this field. Despite this, significant effort has been made in recent years to produce high-quality, evidence-based clinical research on acupuncture.
